Solids at 4 months??

My daughters pediatrician told me I can start her in solids now. I thought we had to wait till 6 months?? Has anyone else’s LO pediatrician told you to start at 4 months?

A lot of old school pediatricians still say 4 months but yes the recommendation is 6 months.

It’s more about signs of readiness than age. So if they’ve lost their tongue thrust reflex, can sit with some assistance (aren’t dropping over when you sit them up), are interested, etc. my daughter was ready by 5 months and we started with purées but quickly moved on to what we eat.

Pediatricians are responsible for caring for every aspect of medical health from age 0 to 18. It's a huge range of areas to cover. Nobody could be up to date in all aspects of all current research and recommendations for all those developmental stages. 
Most pediatricians have little to no knowledge about nutrition, and yet since they're the people we see regularly about our child's health, they do make recommendations about nutrition. And since many of them aren't well informed about nutrition, often their recommendations run counter to what the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization advise. 
The AAP and the WHO recommendations are based on extensive research, so they're the ones to listen to, and they say to wait till 6 months.

We started our daughter at 4 months with baby led weaning. Just started giving her soft bits of what we were eating and a few purées. She was a hungry little one! WIC gave me some grief about it but if you as the mama think baby is ready I say go for it.

It’s up to you. 6 months is generally recommended. The problem with starting sooner is sometimes they kind of lose interest in nursing because of the food and their main source of nutrition comes from nursing. So I personally think if you can wait (unless for your child your pediatrician thinks you SHOULD start sooner for some reason) then you should wait until 6 months. That’s just from my personal experience.

Mine said 4 months with both of my children, my eldest being 5 years old now. Their pediatrician said 6 months is outdated information and new research says 4 months is fine for introducing solid food. 
It’s not their primary diet, just introducing it.

The recommendation is 4-6 months, more recently they have started suggesting closer to 6 months. We started on our own at 4 months bit by bit and got the green light from her pediatrician at our appointment the other day (5 months)

I started at 4 1/2- 5 months with my pediatricians approval. My daughter was showing signs of readiness. Sat well assisted, watched us eat, smacked her lips at what we were eating etc.. I started with baby oatmeal mixed with breast milk. 6 months is just a guideline/ not all babies fall within that. Some are ready a little sooner and some aren’t ready till a little later.
