Are you religious?

G

I just watched this TED talk for my philosophy class and I found it so well spoken and I couldn’t have put it better myself.

I feel religion is a major controversy to everyone and i want to know what your thoughts are. Are you religious? Why or why not? I feel this TED talk is really interesting and if you’ve got the time go check it out.

To sum it up, she basically talks about how religion has been so manipulated throughout the years and lost sight of the core value or the “golden rule” universally across all religions and I don’t think i could agree more. That core value is simply treat others how you want to be treated. Basically: be a decent human being no matter what someone looks like or their political views or their sexual orientation. None of that should matter to anyone but apparently some people think it’s relevant

She talked about how “Christians” use scripture to condemn others and use it to be right, but that’s not what religion should be. It’s to love your neighbor as yourself.

We’re all human beings who should be respected as so.

I’ve seen the crazy super religious people who condemn everyone for every little thing they do which gives religion a bad name and I’ve seen people who completely just get set off at the thought of someone being religious and they live their life against religion.

I’ve also been watching the fosters recently (great show) and there was an episode where their son wanted to go to a Catholic Church camp with his girlfriend but the parents are a lesbian couple who are against him going people Catholics are against gays. They are shocked the the parents of the girlfriend were like “no we completely support this family. As a Christian, the most important thing to us is family” and i think this is where religion goes wrong in the real world. It should be exactly like that. It should be loving everyone no matter what, and i don’t get why that concept is so hard for people. I’m a Christian myself but my church is the most loving environment. We actually had a previously trans speaker (he is now de-transitioned but for a majority of his younger life he identified as female) and i think religion should be about loving everyone, not about having a rule book that you use to say who’s good or not.
