How did you and your SO come to a compromise on how many kids you would have and how far apart?

Who got to decide? How do you decide what is reasonable?

My SO and I are having 1 in a couple weeks, but I'm already wanting to have another right away but he wants me to go on birth control and wait 5 years until our 2nd...

I personally want our kids close in age but I feel like I shouldn't try to push it because he is the father and I do want to compromise but I really dont know how to convince him to let me just push 1 or 2 more out before we stop lol
