How do I teach them to self sooth?

Question

Soooo, my 10 month old cant stand being in his car seat without anyone being in the backseat with him. Anyone meaning me or dad. 
I drove 30 mins yesterday with him crying in the backseat until he finally fell asleep. 
How do I teach him to self sooth? And be confident that I’m not leaving him?
Let him cry it out? Or what did y’all do to help this?

I got my daughter a backseat mirror so she can see me and I can see her. She also has toys to keep her occupied and even a book if she chooses. I'll also give her a snack like baby puffs to munch away at.

Assign a toy that he only gets when he’s in the car seat. A mirror helps. Instead of us looking at each other, I have it so he looks at himself

This might sound silly, but do you have toys in the back for him to play with?
Regardless, this might just be a tough little stint for you as you drive.. he will learn that there won’t always be someone in the back. It will be hard, but it will pass the longer he goes without someone in the back with him.
As for teaching him to self soothe, it may be something he picks up on his own. My daughter never took a pacifier, but one day started sucking her thumb. Even though she sucks her thumb, I remember exact situations like you’re in (screaming her head off in the car) and I would pray, “Please find your thumb” under my breath. It didn’t always happen, even though she had that coping skill. Hopefully he will pick up something soon, so you can drive without the intensity of the screams💛

You could try taking short trips every day until he gets used to it. You could start with 10 minutes then once he’s ok with that move it to 15 until you’re up to 20-30 minutes at a time. My son has never had an issue in the car, but I also only rode with him in the backseat on the way home from the hospital and never again. It sounds like you’ve created a habit that you’ll have to break. The best thing to do is just be consistent and not give in and sit in the back or you’ll just have to start over again.

I am a home health care aide for babies with special needs. Coming out the hospital with constant attention and slowly getting less it was hard for them. I was trained to start by in house leaving them alone. Just outside the room then while the baby cries I timed it 5 min go in and show baby I'm still there and touch baby then walk back out. Then wait 10 min. Go in show baby im still there. Then leave for 15min etc. Its a long process but after a day or 2 the baby feels comfortable and knows you'll always be back no matter how long you're gone and they tend to self soothe. Some parents I worked with would have a specific blanket or animal they would make sure the baby saw and touched and it became a signal to the baby like hey we are leaving we will be back. It's a long process for a few days but you'll be able to do things and stuff while baby self soothes
