Breastfeeding /pumping

So I’ve been breastfeeding my baby and for about 1-2 weeks now I’ve been Exclusively pumping because both of my nipples were so sore and cracked. I have to use a nipple shield while BF though but now I’m worried when I try to latch him that he won’t.. what can I do if I have a hard time latching him.? I just want to cry I feel like I’ve failed him. It just made me cry every time when he latched I wanted a small break so pumping helped me heal while he still got milk..
