Pediatrician correct?

Question

Is my pediatrician correct? She says I shouldn’t be nursing my baby to sleep for his naps. Only when he wakes up. She also said I should let him “cry it out” which I know I cannot do nor want to do. He is only 4mo old.
Thank you all for the comments. It has helped me be more confident in my choice to nurse to sleep. He loves it and it works! Without nursing to sleep he cries non-stop and it breaks my heart.

4 months old is much too young to CIO. Babies don't develop the neurological capability to self soothe until 6mo.
I nursed my first to sleep for naps and sleep, he's now 2 years old, sleeps in his own bed through the night, never had to CIO and he's always slept fine with no bad sleep associations. Follow your gut and parent how you feel necessary mama.

I did find that breaking the association with nursing to sleep helped my little one sleep better later.. like he learned to fall asleep not needing to nurse. That said though I personally don’t see harm in doing it if it’s working for you! Just may mean you break associations when baby is older (or not, may not need to!). We waited to do some gentle sleep training until 6 months. I felt like 4 was too young too

Everything I have read says not to sleep train a baby until they are 6 months. My pediatrician told us to NOT let our little one cry it out. Even when he was 9 months old (which I personally would never do anyway). It’s ok to let them fuss but he said once they start crying comfort them. I still nurse my 12 month old to sleep. He has learned to soothe himself back to sleep. I will hear him fuss at times for about a minute but he falls right back to sleep. When he does cry I comfort him and put him back to bed. ♥️

It's not recommended to nurse your baby to sleep because they will become dependant on it, but it's not wrong. You parent however you choose to. My baby has a bottle before a nap or bedtime most of the time which puts her to sleep but that's just how her feeding schedule is.

It’s a personal choice. I personally nursed to sleep at bedtime until about 6 months of age. I tried to break the habit earlier during the day, so that later sleeping didn’t always depend on eating. It can be a tough habit to break. I don’t think she’s “wrong” to recommend trying to break the habit but similarly you’re not “wrong” if you choose to ignore her advice for the time being. It really depends on when it becomes a problem vs when it’s easier on your family and that happens at different times for different people. I will say, it likely will eventually become a problem, but if it’s not yet, then don’t worry about it.
As far as cry it out, I definitely think four months is a bit young for that, and often isn’t needed. We were able to sleep train at 8 months with controlled comforting pretty easily. We eventually let her cry it out when she was 14 months old after a hospital stay after which we developed some bad habits, but that’s a different story with a lot of variables.

I only listen to our pediatrician on medical advice. but parenting advice? I smile and nod to get them off my back, then do what I feel is right for us. If your baby is healthy, safe, and loved, don't worry.

Those choices aren’t wrong, but neither are yours!
