Toddler prefers dad to mom

Lindsey

My 19 month old prefers daddy to me. I noticed it a few months ago, but feel like it’s gotten worse over the last few weeks. My son was sick recently and when I tried to comfort and soothe him, he arched his back, tried to bite/bit me, and screamed for his daddy. This happened two different times. I was heartbroken.

My son only wants his dad to put him to bed, read to him, comfort him if he’s upset or gets hurt. He thrives off of attention from his daddy (my husband).

My husband works full time and I work part time. He is a very hands on dad and great with our son. He’s a really wonderful dad and we’re so lucky to have him, but lately I secretly resent him for this. I know it’s selfish, but I’m just really hurt.

I read that it’s a sign of independence that my son has a preference and that I shouldn’t take it personally, but it’s hard not to. I also read that toddlers can act like this when mom is pregnant, but that’s not the case with me.

Has anyone else experienced this or is currently dealing with this? Has it lasted long with your toddler? Some posts/articles that I’ve read said that it could last years. 😔 Just looking for some tips if you have any or maybe someone’s support to feel less alone in this.
