Is laying on chest considered tummy time?

Question

The only reason why I ask is because my (almost) 3 month old will only lift her head without struggle when she’s on my chest, but gets so frustrated when she tries tummy time on a flat surface. She can only lift her head for a few seconds while on a flat surface, but for more than 30 seconds while on my chest. Should I be concerned?

Some babies just hate tummy time. Doing it on you is perfectly fine and recommended if they wont do it in the traditional way. Do you carry your baby around on your shoulder like if you were burping? Mine loves being carried that way and has learned to hold her head up rather than resting it on me so she can look around which has really helped how long she can keep her head up. About 10 minutes now at 7 weeks. You could try that to see if that works. As I replied to someone else, anything on their stomach counts, it's really just to get them off their back.

I would just keep trying tummy time! But as long as she’s able to lift her head i wouldn’t be concerned!! Just keep trying! she’ll get there!

What I heard was that it’s not quite as difficult/useful as tummy time since it’s not flat, but that it’s still helpful. So maybe you’d need to do it for longer to get the same benefit. But if baby will tolerate it longer, then you can certainly use it. Just still offer some short periods of tummy time on a flat surface, too.

My boy hated tummt time  on the floor until about 4 months  we still did it but not  for long periods, i think its just so hard are their tummy...on my cheat he was fine for longer period of times and loves it !:) once he had a littlw more shoulder support  he was fine onnthe floor playmat :)

When though she gets frustrated you have to keep letting her work on it. On your chest it’s not a flat surface. I usually lay a blanket on the floor that’s soft and my son has tummy time. We also got one of those play mats that has the toys for tummy time. High recommend it. A few seconds is good though. She’ll improve more as she grows. I think around 4 months is when she should be able to fully support her head.
