Can a 14 year old take Birth Control?

So I’m 14. I was curious to if I could take birth control even though I’m only 14. I looked online that you have to be 16. But others said it was perfectly fine. I read online it can help with periods too. My period is always heavy since I’ve gotten it two years ago. I know that’s not really an excuse for me to go on birth control but I wanted to see if it really would help. I hate having to sit in one place and think, “I don’t want to get up. I don’t want to flood my underwear with the Red Sea.” I also have a boyfriend but we aren’t sexually active. So long story short, would it be okay for me to start taking birth control? And how would I bring it up to my mom?
