Name change after marriage

So me and my partner finally got married after being together 11 years! We had a very tiny ceremony with close family and friends which was perfect for us.

So, straight away I receive Congratulation messages and cards with Mrs (husbands surname) which I don't know why made me feel uncomfortable a bit.

I know my husband dislikes his surname, he was bullied a lot by it growing up and he has no contact with his father whose name it is (his parents never married), in fact his dad used to bully him growing up. I guess that was another aspect that put me off taking his name, as I associate it with that man.

Anyways, we want to have the same surname so when we have kids in the near future we all have the same name. Plus, it will be really nice.

We have considered using his mums maiden name and both changing ours. His grandparents have pretty much been his parental figures in his life so it would be a nice nod to them but he is worried what they will think as they are quite traditional, already assuming I will take his surname.

Just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation? If both have changed surnames as opposed to one taking the others.
