Should I break up with him

So my boyfriend likes to get really toxic on the phone with me (we’re long distance) but when we we’re talking I was also talking with my best friend and suddenly my boyfriend just started to call me ugly and a fag and some other stuff. But when we text he doesn’t act like that he’s always calling me beautiful,and nice smart, funny. It just throws me off and when I was talking to my friend the next day she was pressing on my about how he doesn’t treat me like I’m his girl I kinda responded with he just acts like that around you I don’t know why bc he normally wouldn’t act like that. Most of the time he tells me please don’t break his heart or do you still like me and it just makes me feel so bad. He says I make him happy ( I’m the only person he really talks too) but he also says he’s depressed. I just don’t wanna hurt him but by staying with him it’s just hurting me and making me feel bad. Don’t get me wrong though I love him a lot and I think he loves me but i just feel weird about it all.
