Is it selfish and childish?

Question

Is it selfish and childish for new parents to want a week with no visitors, including all family, after the birth of their first child?
There’s a lot more to the story, but if you just heard that, what would you think?

The exact opposite of childish or selfish. It's responsible parenting to understand your own limitations and what YOU need to be able to care for your child. If you need space from friends and family, that is what you need to function and it isn't selfish because you are doing it to help you be a good parent to a newborn. It would be the same if you felt you needed family support immediately. It's knowing yourself well enough to get the job done to the best of your ability.

No, I feel like it’s what’s best for mom and baby 🤷🏼‍♀️. I don’t plan to even tell anyone except my mom when I go into labor, and she’ll have strict gag orders in place.  His parents will know AFTER the baby comes with strict gag orders, and we will start allowing visitors after a week or so(family only).  At a month old, we will allow friends.

Nope! The mom just birthed a whole ass baby, I definitely think if the parents request time alone they are absolutely 100% in NO WAY selfish

I think I would be kinda upset if everybody wants to come and see my baby right away. Like "let us get to know him/her first". Don't have kids yet tho 😂

If you’ve just had a baby you need time to recover and get used to being a mum without someone (even unintentionally) watching over you, it’s a lot of pressure changing, dressing, feeding etc a newborn when you have no experience, you feel constantly judged even if that’s not the intention of the visitors. I had an emergency c-section in the early hours of Friday, all family and extended family were told the visiting times at hospital on the Saturday and if they wanted to come they were welcome but only at set hospital visiting times. We went home on the Sunday. Parents visited again maybe the Tuesday/Wednesday and extended family the following weekend. I had hyperemesis gravidarum and cholestasis while pregnant so I felt great while recovering from my c section but others need more time to heal. Everyone’s excited to meet a new baby and it’s true they change so quickly in the first few weeks but new mums wishes need to be respected, not only are they recovering from a trauma they are getting to grips with caring for a whole new person.

Is it selfish and childish?
