I think the legality is irrelevant, but the ceremony is not. Vows spoken out loud in front of witnesses has always been a part of any binding ceremony. It doesn't have to be an elaborate affair. But the ceremony itself has a very deep meaning and without it I don't believe it's a marriage.

Depends on the people and how they present their relationship to others. 
I mean.. if they say they are married I'm not like gonna ask them to show me their legal marriage license.. so I wouldn't ever know unless they told me.
Also, my state sti recognizes common law marriages, so, there is that too.

My wife and I did a unity ceremony two years ago and, in our hearts, we felt joined as wives. But she wasn't my wife. She was my wife. She was my fiancee. NOW she is my wife. Now that we have done our vows and signed the papers, she is my wife. Now it's real. Now that we are married, it feels what we did before was make believe. 
I'm not saying that's how anyone who didnt have a legal marriage should feel, or how I feel about others non-legal marriages.

When I think marriage, I think of it in legal terms (e.g. marriage certificate, benefits, etc.) However, where my husband is from, the celebration - or ceremony - is what considers you to be married. Many people there don't make their marriage legally official until they have to for whatever reason. This further ties in to symbols, such as the wedding rings. To me, it is important that a married man or woman wear this symbol. But to my husband, he does not feel the need to wear this.

I'm not sure how many believe in the bible but when Mary was betrothed to Joseph and she became pregnant he had the legal right to put her away. This fact tells me that once two have made their intent to become 1 known it's a recognized vow. I do believe a ceremony is important but for spiritual purposes don't make a vow that you're not totally committed to. The word says it's better to not make a vow than to make one and not keep it. I feel we are held accountable to our word. Just as some States recognize a verbal contract. Some religions don't agree with all laws. I'd say it depends on the couple and the sincerity in the vows they make you each other and their willingness to make this known to others as witnesses. Not necessarily the legal process the law requires. My humble opinion.
