I'm a special needs mother of a beautiful T21 baby and this word not only is offensive but hurts me for my child because that's not what she is.. She is absolutely amazing💕😍 and so perfect and I see people still using this word as a way to get back at one another during an argument or laughing and joking with it. I won't lie.. I used this word multiple times in my life but never really understood the full reasoning behind it until I was blessed with my special needs baby and I apologized so many times to God and my child for saying it b4 I conceived her😞 knowing how ugly I sounded using it. There are no "retarded" People there are ignorant people for using it. Just wanted others opinions as well. Please no hate on this post.

Used in a medical context I don’t think it’s bad. As in “Mentally retarded.” When a doctors saying it, in a non mean way. When someone says “oh that looks retarded” it’s totally different.

I work with kids with special needs. I take it as it being just a word because I know people usually don’t think of people with special needs while using it. People usually use that word naively. However, I can see how it can be offensive to others.

I work with special needs children and adults and it breaks my heart when people say that word. I love my field of work so much, it never feels like work, it’s just feels like I’m hanging out with my best friends and family even. Special needs people never revive enough credit for how amazing they really can be and how sweet they are. I’ve been in situations where I didn’t think I could live anymore and they supported me and loved me so much it was incredible. In high school I even wrote an essay on why not to use that word and presented it in front of my whole class and I was bullied for and was laughed at non stop. Don’t ever let people tell you that individuals with special needs aren’t amazing and loved. Stand up for what is right and don’t back down, show them that you love them unconditionally and support them no matter what❤️❤️

I have aspergers as does my brother, although I'm much higher functioning than he is. I find the word deplorable and won't tolerate its use, and will correct anyone that says it.
