Ladies, does this sound normal ?

We I went to the doctors yesterday for my monthly check up. I’m 13 weeks and 2 days. My SO asked for a sonogram to take home. They told us that the Medical Association wants them to discourage us from getting sonograms done because it’s considered using medical equipment for recreational purposes. I have never heard such a thing. I hear my baby’s heart beat every time I go but shouldn’t they at least do an ultrasound to make sure the baby is growing? This is my first time being pregnant so maybe I just don’t understand but it seems so odd to me. The next sonogram I can get is in January when they are looking for the gender. I haven’t had one done since I was 6 weeks. Anyone else been denied? 
We also asked if we could have a sonogram anyways but we were advised that its super expensive. 
I just want to see my bean growing. 😩😣

Normal. I only had two my whole pregnancy. One at my initial 9 week appointment and the anatomy scan I had at 23 weeks which tells the gender. Most places unless you are high risk limit ultrasounds to 2-3.

Maybe it just where I live but that is super odd to me. Ive had 3 or 4 sonograms with printed pics already. I'm 27 weeks. They did one my first 3 appointments  and my last one they only listened to the heartbeat but my next  appt will be another sonogram. I do have good insurance through my husbands work so that also might be a factor.

They only do ultrasounds every so often unless they are keeping an eye on something then it’s done more frequently..

My office only does medically ordered ones. However, you can specifically make an appointment for a ultrasound, but insurance won’t cover it. You have to pay out of pocket. Ours run about $50 each time.

Most US offices give 2 or 3 standard to check on baby growth. If there's a problem they may do extra or you can pay for private services somewhere else

They should scan you at 12 weeks or so just to make sure baby is growing, I'm from the UK so maybe it's abit different but we get asked about down syndrome screening which they will need to do a ultrasound scan and bloods for. 
In the UK we get scanned at 7 weeks, 12 weeks, 20 weeks and 36 weeks. Maybe more often if theres complications.

This is pretty standard, usually there’s one early on and then one for the anatomy scan between 18-22 weeks. Unless you’re high risk or have some type of complication that’ll be it.
