Are you taking stool softeners?

Question

My cousin suggested taking stool softeners a few weeks before delivery.  I’m 38 weeks tomorrow and just bought a bottle.  Will this help with the motions after delivery?  Also, should I be expecting any cramps like some laxatives do?

I’ve been taking stool softeners and Citrucel throughout my entire pregnancy, on and off until recently. I have had some serious constipation issues since day 1. As of a couple weeks ago, I’ve been taking them every single day because my friend told me her induction failed due to being backed up for 4 days. Being that this has been such a serious issue for me, I’m not taking my chances lol. I’ve never experienced cramping from them, though. If anything, they’re awesome. The only cramping I ever experienced with a laxative was when I double dosed on milk of magnesia out of desperation. I don’t recommend doing that haha.

I wouldn’t proactively take any unless you are currently having issues.  I’ve always been offered stool softeners after birth but never needed them.  And I have had pain meds while in labor.  Everyone is different though.  Staying hydrated is key!

If you're planning on having medications during birth, you may want them, as many of the drugs can cause constipation. But if you have an unmedicated birth, eat a generally healthy diet, and stay hydrated, your body will most likely do its thing juuuuust fine.

I’ve been on the GD diet and been using them daily for over a week now, I’ve been borderline constipated multiple times this pregnancy already and hoping this helps.
