Is this an asshole move?

My mother inlaw is controlling AF and far too nosey for my liking. Literally cannot stand her anymore. And my husband is a p***y who won’t say anything to her. 
So next year we are thinking of buying a new house but I want to move far far away from her and closer to both mine and husbands jobs. 
We both currently live 5 mins walk away from them. We drive about an hour to work so moving closer to work will cut both our journeys down by half hour and move us further away from my inlaws by half hour. I don’t want to tell anyone including my inlaws until our current house is sold and we’ve signed the contract for the house we are buying next year. 
Is this an asshole move or will I be ok doing this?

Nope silent moves are the best! No matter what it is thats what i go by, my husband and i did this and thank god because the minute everyone found out we were moving far far away they blew up our phones, invited us for dinner to convince my husband other wise but guess what too late the moving date was set a week later from them finding out and i couldnt be happier

This is so weird to me. Living near work is the #1 priority for us because you drive to work every day. Do you see them all the time? I guess we just have never been that close to our families where a half hour in any direction makes much of a difference in how often we see each other.

I personally think it's fine for you to wait to tell them. I mean, they're not the ones moving so it doesn't really matter what they think and they can't complain it's too far because it's really not that much farther

Do they pay your bills? Buy your necessities and food? Clean or babysit? If not, you don't owe them anything. Your MIL sounds like my FIL.

Nope. Although I will say, my parents did this when my brother and I were younger and all my grandma did was moved closer. She even tried looking at a house right down the street and a few houses from us.
