Toddlers that won’t listen

My son just turned one and I have no clue how to start disciplining him. I’m a stay at home and I find myself losing my patience to often. This is my first kid btw. I’m just gonna give an example from the other day, but please consider this is one example from about 20 in that day.

So my son got into the cat food

First step was to tell him to stop and remove him from the situation

He went right back

Second step was to yell at him to stop and again remove him

He went right back

Third step I just removed him

He went right back

Fourth step I whacked his hand while telling him to stop

He stuck his hand right back into the cat food

Fifth step I picked him up spanked him and then removed him from the situation.

He threw the biggest fit yelling screaming and then pushed right past me back to the cat food.

Now yes I can move the cat food but there is a lot of situations and things around the house that can’t be moved.

How do you start disciplining a toddler. I don’t feel he’ll understand me taking away toys or time outs. Just yet. But idk did those work you guys. Please help me out.
