We were scammed!!!

My husband and I were scammed!!! He thought it was a check from his work but it was a scam that we did not figure out until after we cashed it! It's one of those checks that will clear at first but then bounce a few days or even weeks later. I'm so embarrassed! We haven't spent any of the money but the banks were closed when we realized the mistake. I'm going to the bank first thing in the morning. Has anyone had this happen and what did the bank do? Are we gonna have to pay thousands of dollars for a simple mistake?!
