Paying for the date

so me and this guy just now started dating got into a fight about who should pay I've always been raised that the guy should always pay or at least the majority of the dates. He wants to go 50/50. Yes I believe in equality but I think it the gentleman think to do. No I am not asking him to pay for everything or evrydate and he knows that. Is it wrong to tell him that I expect him to pay for majority of dates if in relationship?
