How far along do you have to be to get an abdominal ultrasound vs transvag?

I got an abdominal ultrasound at 7 weeks 1 day and saw my son and his heartbeat perfectly. I came in with a super full bladder though to help!

My last pregnancy, I had an ultrasound around 6 weeks and we did abdominal ultrasound because my bladder was so full. Saw everything perfectly and even a heartbeat!

With my first, at my 8 week appointment they tried to do an ultrasound it discovered my placenta was like right at my belly button, and it blocked the view. They took me to the fancy ultrasound and did it transvaginally due to that.
