How long do you breastfeed as your milk comes in ??

Before my milk came in I was feeding for 45-60 minutes, split between both breasts. Now I’ve been lucky to feed 30 before he passes out (4-5 days old). It seems impossible to keep him awake for longer.

I breastfed as long as baby wants. Some babies are really efficient others take longer. My first would eat for 45-60 minutes.  My second would be done in 10-15.  My third is somewhere in between. Unless baby is having issues (transferring milk, not pooping or peeing enough), don’t limit baby.  It’s important for baby to get what they need and help build your supply.  The more they are at the breast the first few days - the quicker it helps bring your milk in.

My baby is very efficient at 5 days old, so unless I recently pumped and she unexpectedly wants to feed, each breastfeeding session is typically <10 minutes. She’s already gained back nearly all of her birth weight, so don’t worry that decreased length of nursing time means less milk; it could just be your baby (and you) getting better at it.

I have heard it's different depending on the baby. When my milk came in my kiddo now empties my breast and is full within 15 to 20 minutes usually. My first was the same my boys just chug their milk O_O

As long as he’s gaining weight and having wet diapers, he should be good 💕
Before it was a thick colostrum that took more work to get out, and he was perfecting his technique. Now he’s got his technique down and the milk flows easier.

With my son my milk came in around 4 days PP. with our daughter (this birth) it came in around day 3 PP. 
My son was a VERY efficient feeder. He would nurse for a solid 15-20 mins and be satisfied for a good 3-4 hrs. Our daughter  will nurse for 10 mins and fall asleep and then want to eat again in 45min-1hr. 
Try little things to keep baby awake / alert while nursing. It helped with our daughter. Also remember the older the get the more efficient at nursing they will get and will draw more milk in shorter periods of time

From what I’ve been told breast feeding is really hard work for babies and burns a lot of calories so don’t let them nurse for more than 30 minutes total as it can be more work than what it’s worth for the small amount of milk they may be getting at the end of a nursing session.
