Verge of crying... advice please...

So my period had been MIA for 4 full days. Yesterday I had started spotting dark brown, light pink, to bright red and that was on and off through the day. This morning I had a medium to heavy flow with small specks of clots but thought nothing of it and when I took the tampon out it wasnt covered in normal fresh blood like what normally happens for me, instead it was all the same dark brown..... has anyone who was pregnant before had this happen to them early in their pregnancy or am i being stupid by getting my hopes too high?
