This is my first baby and I’m due in May. 
Just had some questions...
First what is a postpartum period?
Second when did y’all start y’all’s period after you gave birth? 
I’m only 19 so tbh I have no clue 😳

Postpartum period is just your first period after baby. But you bleed for a while after giving birth. Depends on each person but you could bleed the first 6 weeks after baby then stop then eventually start bleeding again and that’s your first official period. Some women don’t get their periods for a while though if breastfeeding. But not everyone has that happen.

Postpartum Period can be referring to one of two things: 1. Your menstrual period after birth, or 2. the period of time after birth. 
Time wise “The Postpartum Period” can be divided into three distinct stages; The initial or acute  phase (6-12 hours after birth) is when you typically are still in the hospital and being monitored for potential complications. The subacute phase (lasts 2-6 weeks) is when you are bleeding. This bleeding is not menstruation, it is referred to as lochia. The bleeding itself is not a (menstrual) period but the time in which it happens is referred to as the postpartum (time) period), your body is ridding itself of all the extra blood and tissue it needed to nourish your baby during pregnancy. It will start out quite heavy, and lessen overtime. Finally the delayed postpartum phase (can last up to 6 months) is the the period of time during which your body continues to physically recover and your hormones continue to stabilize. During this time you may experience a number of hormonal changes, for example postpartum hair loss (don’t worry, it’s temporary). 
Alternatively, the term “postpartum period” could be used to refer to a postpartum menstrual period. Some women get their first period right after the lochia stops, while others may not have a period until a year or more after birth, or anywhere in between. Often breastfeeding can delay the return of your period, but not for everyone. 
When your period does return it may or may not be irregular at first, it also may or may not be heavier than you are used to at first. 
Also worth noting, you will ovulate BEFORE your period returns, and you therefor can get pregnant again even before the return of your period.
