Worried we can't afford baby
I am 16 weeks pregnant. While we have a lot of debt, we have been in a place where we felt that our income is good and we could make it work with a baby. We also are not young and don't have much time left to have kids (and it took a long time to get pregnant).
In the past couple of weeks, our dog was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. The vet said that best case scenario, if we do surgery, radiation, and chemo, he can have a few months to about a year left. Especially with our baby on the way, I didn't think it was right to put our dog through this and spend a fortune for such a risk. My husband disagrees, and it has caused intense conflict between us. My husband ultimately made the decision for the family: we are doing surgery, radiation, and chemo. So far, without the chemo estimate, the bill is $27,000. This is all due at time of service, and so we have completely maxed out our checking account, credit, savings, and borrowed over $10k from family, with the condition that we pay back ASAP. I don't have much of a say in it, my husband knew my opinion and made the decision anyway.
I am currently panicking because I am thinking about my child and how we don't even have anything left to buy baby things or put together her nursery. We still have income, but all extra we had will now go to paying off the new debt. We already had a large amount of debt that we were managing as best we could, but this puts us over into an unmanageable level. My husband is mad at me because he says that our dog is family and he would pay more if we could and that our dog would give up everything for us, and that I am an unsupportive wife to make it a money issue. I adore our dog, and I don't want to lose him, but I'm going to be a mother and can't just brush that aside. I don't know what to do. I have wanted a baby more than anything and now I fear that we can't afford her.
Has anyone else struggled with affording their baby and do you have any advice you can offer? Is there anyone else out there whose spouse has run them into astounding debt that can relate? I'm rather panicky right now and could use some kindness. Thanks 💛
