How to stop your 3yr old from hitting and saying go away?

My son knows what's right and wrong and he gets punished with the naughty step or I take toys away if he really plays up. I don't always rise to it when he says "go away" because he does it mostly for the attention he hopes would come from it, for example he can be playing near me and be making a tower then say "go away tower" and tell all objects around him to go away.
If I'm speaking to him though and he directly tells me to go away that's when I speak up and tell him to stop saying it and to say sorry. If he doesn't that's when I do what I can like take him on time out so he can think about what he's doing
He doesn't only say go away, he also can "tap" which is a gentle hit, he hits my leg while saying it and now he has started randomly screaming also.
What else can I do to stop it?
He has started to do it in public and everytime he does I threaten to take him home

They may know right from wrong, but they still have emotions that are confusing to them and they don’t know how to process yet. So just because someone may know right from wrong, that doesn’t really mean much of anything when they are still being overwhelmed with emotions and not being able to properly express themselves. He’s only three.

I would ask him what’s a nicer way to say that? I wouldn’t be bothered with when he says it to his own toys, but I would definitely let him know that it’s not a nice way to talk to someone and figure out a better way to say that. He is only three, so you still have to teach him how not to be rude basically. We all want to be left alone sometimes, so maybe he can say something like can I be alone? instead of go away. And if you are directly speaking to him and need his answer and he tells you to go away, then you can say to him something like, “I understand you want to be left alone, but I am asking you a question and I expect you to answer. 
Otherwise, just stay consistent with what you are already doing. Sometimes with children you literally have to repeat yourself for a year. ￼

My 2 year old does this exact thing. They are still learning how to handle emotions (some adults have trouble) and putting words to it. I usually say can we try using our words, it seems to help. Good luck
