Camera for photography

Not period/baby related.. while maybe kinda..

I want to start doing more professional photos for my kids. I'm currently using a cheap phone and the pictures are crap.

Can anyone recommend a good camera for more of a professional look that dont cost a arm and leg. Maybe $300 tops. Would love to take classes and have fun with editing and maybe do amateur photography for my family for them for cheap too.
