Would you travel up to 3 hours away from your hospital at 39.5 weeks pregnant?

My step dad passed away and the funeral will be in DC which is an hour and a half away from my hospital (with no traffic). With traffic it could be twice as long. I told my family I wouldn’t be able to go because it’s too far. They were understanding, but I just feel guilty about it. I also am afraid if I go I will get too emotional and cause stress to the baby. What would you do?

Is this your first baby? I’d ask your doctor what they think based on a cervix check beforehand. You could always go and turn around at the first sign of cramping.

If it was just a random family member or acquaintance, I’d say don’t go, but if it was my stepdads funeral, I wouldn’t miss it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

No, I wouldn't. I usually have my children before that point. My first kid was born at 39 weeks, my second at 38+6. There's no way I'd be traveling past 36 weeks with my current baby.

I asked my doctor when I was pregnant with my first about traveling 2 hours away, and he basically said as long as there are hospitals along the way I’d be fine, and I should just go to the nearest hospital. I’m guessing there are probably plenty of hospitals in the DC area, so I would check with your doctor and then make sure to figure out which hospitals accept your insurance, etc just in case.

My doctor said no traveling at all past 36 weeks. My family lives an hour away from the hospital and she wasn’t even comfortable with me traveling that far. It is a funeral though, so your doctor may check you and give you the ok and just tell you what to look out for on the way. They’d probably want you to stop and walk a little bit in the middle of the trip to help with blood flow.
