Help, how do I handle this?

Question

So I just landed a job I really wanted. Today I signed the employee documentation/orientation. My first day is this Wednesday. (12th)
I just found out that my dad was in a car accident and I have to fly home immediately.
How do I email the manager? I want to start work on the 20th but I feel like it would be unreasonable to ask for that much time. Help 😔

As somebody who works in an HR department, CALL THEM. Explain the situation. More than likely if they want to hire you they will be willing to accommodate a later start date so you can be with your family and not distracted during your first week wondering what is going on with your dad, and they'll appreciate that you communicated with them rather than just not showing up. One of my biggest pet peeves at work is a on-call, no-show. HR/Supervisors are human too, we try to be compassionate and understanding but our reaction all stems from how you handle the situation to start with.

I’d call and speak to them honestly. Email is really impersonal. Just explain your situation. A lot of employers are very understanding of legitimate family emergencies.

Tell your boss the situation and they will understand. It’s hard but rewarding because you’ll get to be with your family after a traumatic experience and you’re being responsible in letting your employer know. You got this! A supportive manager means a lot too!
