How does a "bad parent" redeem themself?

Question

Here's what I mean (first of all, this is not about me nor anyone I know. I just think it's a psychological question that I'd be interested to see all the different answers to) : 
Someone is a "bad parent" (which could be anything from slightly mean to abusive, take it however you'd like), and one day, they realize they were wrong in their behavior, and they decide they must change. How does this parent fix their reputation with others, and with their children? How does this parent redeem themselves to their children?

I used to spank my son. It was always done calmly with an explanation as to why he was being spanked. His behavior did not improve and it actually began to escalate. My husband and I decided to switch to peaceful parenting. We sat down with our son and apologized for spanking him. We told him that he didn't have to forgive us but that we were going to be better parents from then on. That was over 6 years ago. None of our boys have been spanked since. We completely changed our parenting style and our boys are doing great. It took a lot of self discipline and a lot of research and study to make the change since both my husband and I came from authoritarian homes. Words are cheap. It was our actions that made the difference. We are a happier family and our boys are thriving since we made the switch to peaceful parenting.

My dad, who is now my very best friend and I love him to pieces, used to have a temper and was verbally and physically abusive. One day I ran away because I couldn't take it anymore but my dad begged me to come back and told me he was going to work on our relationship. My dad never cries but he cried when apologizing to me so it felt very sincere. My dad has never been abusive to me since and had learned how to discipline in a more healthy way. I forgive my dad for what he had done and I did that because he has proved to me that he is a better man now and wont hurt me again. I think parents can redeem themselves by going to therapy, taking parenting classes, talking to other parents about what they're going through and ask for advice on what they should do and I think improving their relationship with their kids like spending more time with them and supporting them more are all good ways to redeem yourself as a parent.

The same way anyone else does, apologizing and changing their behavior. My mom and stepfather were horrible to my sister and I growing up, constant screaming and harshly punishing us for stupid things. They kicked me out at 13 and since then my mom has apologized and changed alot, I dont even recognize her now shes so sweet and caring. My dad was a different kind of bad parent, he was addicted to his computer and would forget to feed us, the house was always a mess and we never had clean clothes, he would have parties after we went to bed. That all stopped when I was 10 or so, he quit drinking and got a job, (he had some serious brain damage as a kid that he needed to overcome) he apologized to us and now hes a total workaholic and his house is spotless, he doesn't even have enough friends for a party anymore lol. My parents were young parents and screwed up big time but now I wouldn't trade them for anything, I have awesome parents and they're so supportive and kind.

It takes a lot of time and only if the victim is willing to accept it. Both of my husbands parents were absent and his mom was verbally and physically abusive. Both of them want involvement in our lives and I do honestly believe they’ve changed. His mom even sometimes watches our son. However, my husband never wants to make an effort to spend time with them. Even when I ask him to go see them. They are divorced and I think he sees his dad three times a year total. I wish more parents understood that it’s okay to be a strict parent but you have to treat your kid with dignity. You can force yourself and values on them when they don’t have a choice but it’ll be up to them if you’re a part of their life when it is up to them.

This depends on a lot of factors. In some situations, an apology, change of behaviour, and therapy for all involved to help get through will be sufficient. Some things, though, just can't be fixed.

Firstly they need to read a book/ get consultation/ buy into a specific new method of parenting to help them move away from the bad behaviour.
Next they need to sit their kids down and apologise and tell them that things are going to change and get them to list the things about their parents behaviour that they would like to change.
Next they need to get some anger management/ intervention from professionals

My dad is one person that I think will never truly change. I’ve tried to reconnect with him ,but he’s still a manipulative and verbally abusive asshole so he’s not in my life. 
My mother isn’t a bad parent ,but there are just behaviors she refuses to recognize that she does, so I believe she can change if she admits to herself that some stuff she does has affected my little brothers and I. We have went to therapy before just her and I. She didn’t want to do the things the therapist said which is why we still have a shitty relationship. Like I give her credit for being strong and providing for my brothers and i. She’s just not the parent you talk to about anything at all or prepare to get a lecture.
