Autism?

I have a strong strong feeling my son is showing signs of autism and I’m struggling with how do I bring up my concerns to his doctor and father.
Also just looking for some insight on steps to take and what other people noticed/experienced with their children who have ASD.

As a mother you usually know! It’s crazy but I knew my eldest daughter was going to have Autism when she was 6-7 months old..... they told me she was way to young to diagnose. But I knew it. In the pit of my stomach.... and when my beautiful princess was 3 years old... she was diagnosed with asperges syndrome... she is 9 this year. And it hadn’t been easy especially because she is hitting puberty (I got my period at her age) she already has breasts and pubic and under arm hair. We are expecting her period this year.... so it’s been really hard... but no one can do a better job at loving and caring for them like us. BE STRONG!!!! I am hoping the best for you mumma!!

Just as an update: he was referred to an early intervention program today and will be getting screened for ASD, his doctor agreed with my concerns.

My daughter was diagnosed in December with ASD. She also has Down syndrome. I had thought she showed signs several years ago but it was hard to know if the signs were also typical of kids with DS. Our therapist brought it up and we asked our pediatrician for a referral to be evaluated. Since our therapists brought it up, we didn’t have a super deep conversation with our ped about it but she felt our observations and therapists concerns were plenty for a referral. If there are specific things your son is doing, I would ask your husband if he thinks it’s abnormal when your son does a particular behavior and go from there. As far as your ped, just say you have concerns about autism and would like to talk about getting a referral to be evaluated. The thing about autism is, it doesn’t change who your child is because they have always had it. The only benefit to getting a diagnosis is so your child can thrive in the best environment for them. We haven’t started any therapy specific to autism yet but hope to by summer.

My son is 11 months and displaying signs. What I have read is it’s not necessarily things he does that may indicate autism, it’s things he isn’t doing. Like he isn’t responding to his name, he isn’t babbling, he didn’t sit up on his own until 10 months, etc. Then there’s other things he does do that can be signs but could also be his age. So, I am also taking him in for an early evaluation to track progress and regression over the next 7 months to a year. I hope you got some reassurance at your baby’s visit.

My son will be 2 in august, we noticed quite early I would say around 1, however as a baby he would cry for hours on end and I knew something was not right. Around 8/9 my son start really excessively hand flapping, and didn’t make eye contact at all, he still doesn’t wave clap or point, he used to head bang against a wall however this calmed right down. Doesn’t answer to his name. I took him to doctors and expressed my concerns my doctor then referred me to  paediatrician, paediatrician then referred us to occupational therapy, makaton, speech and language specialist as he still doesn’t talk and therapy through play.

Have you mentioned to his father any of the things he’s displaying (or things he’s not doing) that are concerning you? I’d start there. Just say something along the lines of, “I’m a bit worried he is/isn’t doing x, I might bring it up at his next doctor’s visit”.
As for your doctor, they would deal with this sort of thing all of the time. I’d just write a list of your concerns to take along to your next appointment so you don’t forget anything.
