I'm 18, I live with my mom; can she still go through my phone?

We qualify for free phones, so nobody is really "paying" a bill. I feel really weird knowing that I'm legally an adult and my mother still feels the need to monitor my phone. I have a boyfriend, and I don't want her intercepting things from him, and I have stuff I wouldn't really want her to see. I feel like, I'm an adult and I shouldn't have to clear my search history for my moms regular phone checks. When I try to talk she says "you're my child, under my roof, if you don't like it, leave". Which I am in 3 months. I just wanted to get an outside opinion since it is a little late to actually do anything. 💕💕 *Can I keep the same phone, but just put it on my own plan?

Technically, yes she can. Should she? Well, that's up for debate. I think if there's reason to then yeah. You live in her house. But if there's no reason to question anything, why bother?

Errrrm, I have to disagree with the majority of these comments. Are you from the US? Because I’m from the U.K. and here in the U.K. your classed as an adult at the age of 18. No way would my mum be going through my phone. She never did at any age to be fair but definitely not at 18 lol!!! What is she looking/checking for? But then having said that, my phone was mine. I paid for it and I had my own contract with it so she didn’t have any entitlement to go through my phone & honestly I love my mum to pieces and we’re so close but if she asked to go through my phone I think I’d laugh in her face😂 I think she’d expect me too as well.

I do believe in ‘my roof, my rules’. You will move out soon, so it shouldn’t be an issue for you much longer.
When you say ‘we’ qualify for new phones, I am also assuming it is based on your household income, so you have your free phone because of what your guardian(s) do or do not make for income.. once you move out, I am assuming you plan to function as an adult. This likely means getting your own phone, or qualifying for a free phone on your own. If you are still benefiting from a free family plan, then you are benefiting as a dependent and only have that phone because of your mom... and possibly tax payers 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s a little invasive that’s for sure, I definitely wouldn’t have wanted my mom going through my phone at 18. She can though, it is her house and she chose to give you a free phone that she qualified for.
