BLW Fails?

Question

Have any of you had any bad experiences with BLW? I'd really like to know to be able to form a fairer picture. What happened and did you still continue or switch to purees? 
Im always seeing moms gushing about "BLW all the way!" and posting pictures of healthy, happy babies confidently nibbling away at big chunks of food. It all looks very convincing. But i want to know the other side of it too.

I didn't have any fails. My issue was learning to relax. I was very worried she would choke when I first started so I did research on the difference between gagging and choking.

We did BLW and had one bad/scary experience. We’d given our daughter a piece of pork (like a finger sized strip for her to gnaw on) and she gnawed away on it (6-7 months old). Later that night, she wouldn’t nurse. She’d try to latch and just cry. I thought maybe it was nipple confusion, so I was very frustrated but figured she wouldn’t starve herself. She stopped crying, so I put her to bed. She woke up a couple hours later and still wouldn’t nurse. I was distraught. She seemed to be trying but couldn’t. I woke my husband and we tried a bottle but that didn’t work either. I googled frantically and eventually found something that prompted me to check her mouth. I did a finger sweep and found a dime-sized piece of pork stuck to the roof of her mouth. It as physically blocking her ability to suck. I’m so incredibly grateful she didn’t choke in her sleep. We continued to do BLW and I’d do it again, but we always checked her mouth after a meal.

My baby is just a headache with solids. He didn’t want purees when we started at 6 months so I did the BLW thing and he did ok. He sucked at actually eating food, he could get it in his mouth and mush it up but he’d spit it out instead of swallowing, he had a blast though he was always so happy so try to eat with the rest of us. It was a little discouraging to see him eat maybe a bite per meal and other babies his age were eating whole plates of regular food. Around 7/8 months he decided he didn’t like BLW anymore but wanted purees instead. Then he didn’t want purees or to feed himself, instead he currently wants me to feed him the stuff off my plate with a spoon/fork. He’ll sometimes feed himself off his own plate but not regularly anymore.
I don’t think we had a bad experience per se, just didn’t go the way I expected it to. I thought by now, about to turn 9 months, he’d be shoveling a plate of my food in his face (that’s how it went with my first) but he’s content with me feeding him a few bites from my plate then just playing with what’s on his plate. Sometimes I still feel behind when I see other babies his age eating like my first did, gotta remind myself he’s his own person and does things his own way.

My kid has a tendency to shove too much food in his mouth or work his bites to the back of his mouth, which triggers his gag reflex and he coughs. This happens quite often. We still keep at it because we've watched him improve immensely with motor skills (picking up food) and moving food around in his mouth in a very short time. We just make sure to have water for him when he eats so he can take drinks periodically. Wash it down, lol. (Not while coughing. That should probably be said).

My son at almost 2 still rarely chews his food before swallowing. We’ve never had a choking scare, but when it was time to start foods I went with purées. My anxiety was just too much for BLW. I think if you can be calm about it, great but I also don’t see anything wrong with starting with purées. We did purées from 6-9 months and then transitioned to table food. His development was never hindered by purées which I feel is the thing BLW groups harp about.

What about salt? When you feed the baby whatever you're eating, do you manage to take a portion out for baby EVERYTIME before seasoning it? Not sure if that's always possible tbh..
