Induction went completely different than planned
So here’s my birth story for my baby girl Sunny. I was scheduled for induction on my due date 2/19/2020 at 6am. I had no complications I was just tired and ready to have a baby so when the midwife offered induction I jumped all over it. I had been 3cm and 60% effaced for 3 weeks so the plan was to start with pitocin. I checked into the hospital where they went over consents, put me in a delivery room, started an IV, did an ultrasound to confirm baby was head down and then finally a cervical check 4cm 80%effaced. They said pitocin would be started at 8:00 on 2ml/hr and increased by 2 every 30 minutes.
8:00 pitocin started and immediately contractions started but they were not painful. Every half hour they bumped it up until I was at 20ml/hr. At this point I was still rating pain at 1-2 and knew that nothing was happening below. At 1:30 doc came in and said he thought it was best to break my water so I agreed. About 20 minutes after that I was in so much pain! I had planned to use IV pain meds like I did with my first but after about an hour of the most painful contractions I’ve ever experienced I asked for an epidural. I cried bc that was not part of my plan, but I knew I couldn’t take the contractions for 5-6 more hours and with the way I was progressing it would’ve taken that long or longer. So at 2:45 I got the epidural and my nurse checked me after she put in the catheter. I was 5cm and 100% effaced.
At 3:30 I asked to be put on my side so I could try to take a nap. I put a peanut ball between my legs for comfort and to help dilate me faster. At 4:00 I was feeling contractions inside my vagina and all of a sudden I told my mom and husband “you need to get the nurse bc I feel like I have to poop but I think her head is right there.” My mom thought I was being dramatic and even told the nurse that. She said well let’s just check, bc you never know stranger things have happened. She put her fingers in and had an odd look on her face. I said “what is it?” She said well I need to get a back table set up bc you’re complete and her head is right there. We were all in shock. I had gone from 5cm-complete and ready to push in 30 minutes! 😬
While they were finishing setting up I said where’s Carla (my midwife) I really think I need to push. They grabbed her and said you gotta get in here she’s starting to push! I did my first set of pushes at 4:27 and baby was born at 4:43! She got stuck and kept turning in the birth canal. It was so scary but finally the midwife got her shoulders out. She was purple, limp, and not crying. I kept asking is she ok? Carla kept saying yes she’s fine, but she didn’t look like it to me. After what seemed like forever she let out a tiny cry. I was so relieved.
So on 2/19/2020 at 4:43 I gave birth to my baby girl Sunny Dawn. Here’s the kicker...she weighed 10lbs 10oz!!! It was no wonder she got stuck.
