Hinting for him to ask me, now im worried..

Me an this boy have been seeing each other for like 4 months and its going really good an we both seem to really like each others company, we both always joke around saying we are bf and gf but he hasnt actually asked me, last night i was hinting for him to ask me but he didnt understand the hints, so i just said when are you going to ask me, he kept saying you should ask me but I’ve told him i like to be traditional (where the boy actually asks the girl) so he said he’s waiting to get his own place an just get his life sorted out... but I’ve had people say that in the past just as an excuse so i got in a mood with him because it just sounded like an excuse so when i got in a mood he was like fine then will you be my gf an i was like no your not ready so dont ask me just because I’ve got in a mood, an he just kept going on about that he’s ready to ask me to be his gf, but seconds before he said he wasn’t ready, i just want peoples advice like should i trust him when he says he’s ready because yday he was saying he wasn’t ready...

I just would like some advice like what should i do, i feel like I’m comparing him to boys in the past which i shouldn’t be doing but its hard not to. Any opinions please comment i need another persons advice
