If you get paid salary, and you don't work all work due to the coronavirus, do you still get paid?

My boyfriend has been at his job for 2 years and has been getting paid salary the entire time.  Well due to the coronavirus, he hasn't been working at all this week. Yesterday his job called him and said that "they never agreed to pay him salary so they're going to stay paying him hourly" he worked 2 hours last week so this morning he only woke up with a $40 paycheck. Can his job do this? Is there somebody he can call? He has all his check stubs and they're all identical because for the last 2 years THEY'VE BEEN PAYING HIM SALARY!

I think it’s up to the employer. My job is still paying but that was a ceo level decision.

This is entirely dependent on his contract and company. I am hourly, and we will be paid no matter what. My boyfriend is salaried, and he, along with the rest of the managers chose to take a massive pay cut to guarantee they can still pay their hourly employees their full wages and hopefully keep the restaurants open.

Just because there identical doesn’t mean he was on salary maybe he just works the same amount of hours every week .

Being paid salary does not mean you get paid for not working. I’m not sure where anyone got that impression. Most agreements for salaried employees state they will work a certain number of hours per work or use PTO to make up for the time they didn’t put in or take unpaid leave. There is no true benefit to being a salaried employee, it’s actually a benefit to the company because it means they don’t have to pay you overtime. He didn’t work, or use PTO he doesn’t get paid. Sorry, but that’s the reality of the world.

He should be able to file unemployment. But he would have to look through the contract he has with his employer. My husband signs a new one every year. He’s still getting paid

If it wasn't in his contract that he was being paid salary, then they can. My husband's job stated in his contract he signed when he was hired that he was salaried for 73k a year, so that's what he gets paid. What did the contract he signed say?
