I think every couple handles arguments differently depending on the personalities of the 2 people involved. 
Most of the time if we disagree on something we will try talk it out. Sometimes we shout and this results in one or both of us walking away for an hour to cool down and then we apologise and talk it out. We are not together to try hurt one another but that doesn’t always mean we agree on everything.

We haven't had many big fights. It usually starts with silence while I gather my words. I'm not good under emotion.(which is probably good because then it doesn't really escalate and our "fights" stay pretty calm) We'll sort of act like nothing happened until we're ready to deal with it. Then at a good time for both of us  (sometimes within 10 minutes, sometimes a couple days later) we'll share what we've decided needs to be said. 
One thing that has seemed to help a lot is even if I've "won", I find something to sincerely apologize to him about. Especially if him "losing" means he needed to apologize to me. Like... "I'm sorry if I didn't explain something very well". Or "I'm sorry if I seem unreasonable". Or "I'm sorry if I made you feel like..."
It keeps things vulnerable and fair on BOTH sides. That's good because my husband is pretty manly and doesn't take vulnerability well. It sort of evens us up so he's more comfortable to talk about things and admit when he's been wrong.
I've noticed since I've started doing this that he's more apologetic and sympathetic to me when I've "lost" as well.

I tend to “back down”. Not give up, but collect myself and pause so that I don’t add more fuel to the burning flame. He usually catches himself before he starts raging. We calmly talk through right away or we give ourselves a few minutes to calm down before addressing the issue.

Horribly. Yelling and screaming and being petty and rude. We went to marriage counseling because neither of us could ever get our point across and we needed a third parties help to figure it out. Now it’s better, not perfect. Now we usually wait until we’re calmed down and talk with understanding. Can’t really do it now, but we used to go out to eat if we were having an argument. Can’t scream at each other in public and you can’t blame your attitude on being hangry haha.

Honestly they really don’t escalate into screaming or anything like that. Some frustration, sure though. Still try to use logic. 
Although if you or your partner are ones to get hit headed then definitely take a break and come back to it.
