Breastfeeding a Preemie
When does it get easier?! Any other mamas of preemies stuck in the nurse, bottle, pump, repeat cycle?! My LO was born at 34 +4 and had a 13 day NICU stay due to needing to be on CPAP briefly, to regulate blood sugars, and to make sure he was feeding and gaining. I nursed as often as I could while in the NICU and had tons of help from lactation Consultants but since we’ve been home we’ve been struggling. He was initially getting 4 bottles of fortified breastmilk daily which we have cut down to once daily (hopefully we will be done all together) so I’ve been nursing on demand but we offer bottles of breastmik afterward since some sessions he doesn’t drink as much. But I’m still stuck pumping after every nursing session which is very frustrating. I have a 2 year old too and this process is so time consuming. I know it’s temporary but I’m struggling. I feel overwhelmed but don’t want to give up because breastmilk is amazing and since he’s a preemie I want to make sure he gets my milk versus formula. I’m working with a lactation consultant to help overcome difficulties with his minor tongue tie and receded chin as well as to troubleshoot any other problems we might face. But if we continue to struggle with nursing I’ll probably exclusively pump which I want to avoid resorting to at all costs. Any support, encouragement, advice is appreciated! Thank you!
