Does the trauma of rape ever fade?

It’s been 8 years and I still think about it often. I’ve been to therapy briefly. Just wondering if it’s going to fade one day or if it’ll be on my mind forever...

It's been almost 9 years for me and I think about it less and less. I dont have the best advice but I want to say you're not alone. I can speak about it without crying my eyes out now but i also have things that "trigger" me every once in a long while. I put trigger in quotes because I hate that word.

Yes and no. I wish I had a better answer. I'm still a bit uncomfortable around people. I get a little anxiety around men I do not know well. Otherwise I have gotten over most of the sick to my stomach feeling I had after each "incident". I had to find a way to get over any self hatred/disgust that I had initially. There are days where I struggle with it. I will eventually be seeing a professional to get everything off my shoulders but over the years, with the right type of support it does get a little better.

It fades. I was sexually abused by a family member in elementary school and honestly thought the trauma would feel intense forever, it faded. Then my house was broken into and I was raped in my mod twenties and the trauma was crazy intense for months, over time its faded into more of a background trauma. Yes it comes up sometimes, mostly when I'm stressed from other things, but then it retreats again. It really can get better.

I was molested by my father for 9 years and it didn’t end till I was 16 and he didn’t go to prison for it till I was 19 and I’m 23 now. With all that said it has been basically 7 years for me since the last time it happened and I can talk about it most of the time without feeling gross about it or tensing up. There are times where I have random thoughts about it though. Also, I have frequent thoughts about the court stuff which is bothersome at times but over all it’s in the back of my mind. So I’ll say it more or less just comes and goes. Most of the time if something has triggered it.
