Flying safe with 8 mo. old?

We had plans to fly across the country to visit our family and friends and introduce our LO this summer. We know some models are predicting that COVID will spike again this fall, so we are anxious to visit now, but are not really confident that it's safe to fly. We don't want our judgement to be clouded by how much we miss family and want them to meet our LO; his safety comes first--what would you do?

We are going to Florida at the end of July. We won’t have our kid though. I’m from Idaho and we bought a more expensive ticket that only stops in one city and it’s a small airport. We didn’t want to risk the bigger airports.

It’s so hard. I feel for you. Personally, we wouldn’t be flying this summer for sure. A road trip might be safer though.

My husband flew for work the other day. He said everyone wore their masks and he wasn’t ever worried. My friend is a flight attendant and she said they’re being really careful to keep things clean and ensure everyone keeps their masks on. My husband did say the flights were full because there are so few running. But he also said that on the bigger plane he was on that had 3 seats, they kept the middle seats empty

We flew with our 8 month old from NY to Florida a few days ago. Airports are empty.

I personally wouldn't. My cousin is married to a Marine and they  moving from NY to San Diego for relocation. She just flew there with their 9 yr old and said it was super stressful. The planes are cleaner but she said the airports were crowded and people we not social distancing and not always wearing masks. And while you were supposed to be wearing your masks on the flight the whole time she said a lot of people around her were taking them off when the flight crew was out of sight. With plane air being recycled/recirculated it will only take 1 person. With flight cancellations she had a lot of layovers and said the smaller airports were better so if you are gonna do it maybe avoid like LAX or JFK type size but if it were me I would wait. Also depends on where you are coming/going...some places are much worse than others. I know its a stressful decision so good luck either way!!

I had a friend who recently traveled for work, she’s a total germaphobe even without Covid. She was saying how diligent airlines are being and how few flights are operating right now. If those you are visiting feel comfortable with it, I’d probably take the chance while I can. Our local state colleges are already saying they’ll do in person for now but will be going back to distance ed after Thanksgiving break.
