Confusion

I found out june 2019 that I have hsv 2. My boyfriend got retested 2 weeks ago and his test results for both types are negative. We're going on 2 years together next month. If it was from a previous exposure, wouldn't he have gotten it from me by now? I didn't have my first outbreak until may 2019.. We started using condoms after getting my test results back. So I'm thinking maybe he just got lucky? I haven't really had an outbreak since last year. So I'm just trying to get some answers.
