To shop or not to shop?

Hi everyone! Im currently 26w and i haven’t bought many things for my baby boy. Just a couple pacifiers etc., my mother in law bought a couple clothings but i dont know when to buy other stuff. In my family they believe it’s bad luck to buy too early. So i dunno.
When did you or will you start shopping for your baby? 
And what are the things i should be buying first?

I've bought one outfit. Granted I'm having another girl and already have a swing, playpen, bath, swaddlers, and some clothes. I need to buy a new stroller, a car seat, and I would like a bedside bassinet. Going to start looking and purchase in the next few weeks. Im 27 weeks now.

I'm pretty sure we aren't doing a shower, but my plan has always been to buy the big items ourselves and only put smaller and medium priced things on the registry. That allows us to make our own choices about the bigger things and buy when we are ready, but still leaves things for others. We are very fortunate that our parents are buying our travel system and our crib as our gifts, so we only have a few larger purchases to make ourselves.
Like you, I'd prefer to make those purchases over time instead of all at once!

I get stuff from rummage sales cause BRAND new clothes for a baby seems like a really stupid idea to me 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve been buying stuff since I was like 11 weeks. My other two pregnancies I did all my shopping in my last month but this time I started early. It’s been fun and I won’t feel so overwhelmed trying to buy everything at one time.

Things that are always good to load up on are the basics, diapers, wipes and bath stuff (lotion ,soap,) it always costs a fortune and people don’t usually gift to much of it there into lots of the cutesy things and clothes

We bought some big items like the crib and recliner. I got a ton of stuff that I bought from my friend for a good price. We aren’t buying anything else until after the baby shower. Plus we get a discount coupon for creating the registry to get whatever we need that we don’t get

With my oldest, my family helped me with so much. I had her 9 weeks early so her birth was unexpected. With my youngest daughter, I started buying all of her stuff starting at 16 weeks. I bought all of the bigger things at once and more essentials and then my postpartum items and smaller items, I bought over time until a week or 2 before her due date. With this baby, I started buying at 13 weeks. He pretty much has everything he needs.

I didn’t buy anything until after my baby shower with my first and only had to spend $100 on the things I didn’t get and buy myself a glider (but I didn’t have a glider on my registry). So basically after cash and gift cards and everything everyone bought I spent very little money. Even had enough diapers for the first 6 months bc I had a diaper raffle. So if you have a lot of friends and family I recommend waiting. ☺️

My mom keeps telling me not to buy stuff and to wait till after our baby shower. The problem with that is, if I wait I might find that none of the bigger items were purchased and I will be stuck with one last minute shopping spree that could cost me hundreds. I would much rather make a large purchase every two weeks on my own and not wait for someone to gift me an item. I also don’t like the idea of waiting till the baby shower because it’s a month and a half before my due date and I don’t want to be organizing and putting things together last minute. (Obviously I have my partner) but I like getting things done ahead of time and not waiting on someone to help me. I did purchase a bassinet, some clothes, diapers, wipes, some safety things and I posted it on my Snapchat story and people were already saying “stop buying, and wait for the baby shower” 🙄 it’s easier said then done when it’s your first baby. I say start buying stuff!
