Is getting a painting as a gift disappointing?

Question

I do oil painting and I’ve sold a few paintings before. I don’t really think of myself as an artist though. I’ve given a few people paintings as gifts before but they were family so I’m not sure if they actually liked it or if they were just being nice. I don’t want to keep doing this if it is a disappointing gift. Let me know what you think.

If it was something that doesn’t match my decor or have meaning I wouldn’t really be that thrilled and would appreciate it but might not hang it

I've given at least two paintings as gifts to family members one was of birds to my grandma because she likes birds another was to mil of a dog and reminded her of the dog she had lost that one is hanging in her house. 
 I think it just depends on the person really.

You just have to make it meaningful. Paint them something important to them or to your friendship.
