Is being engaged the same as being bf/gf, gf/gf, bf/bf?

My mom sees it as it being similar to being bf and gf and its not as serious as being married, but there is a difference and different terms are there for a reason. I feel it is a step up from bf and gf and should be taken more seriously and respected by the family and couple and looked at as such, not like they are still just bf and gf and shouldn't be referred to as "your boyfriend" or "your girlfriend".

Lately my mom just says his name or "my future son in-law" and his family just says my name. (We've been engaged for a year and 3 months now)

Just wondering how others see it
