Who should empty the pockets?

Just wondering how other family's do their laundry. My bf has a bad habit of forgetting things in his pockets before I do laundry (he helps sometimes but I'm usually the laundry person) and he always tells me that I should just check all his pockets before I throw it in the machine, and I tell him I wouldn't have to check all his pockets if he would just empty them when he takes them off every time. Do you have this issue with your partner? Or do they always empty their pockets? And who's job do you think it should be to be responsible for it?
