Going from 1 to 2

Currently pregnant with baby #2 and my son will be 2 1/2 when baby brother or sister is born. What did you find was the best was to ease your toddler into having a baby around? We bought a baby doll for him just to get used to what a baby is and I try to make sure he’s “nice” to the baby. He’ll carry the baby around and try to feed it and hug it and stuff. But I’m just wondering if anyone else tried this and it really helped get used to a baby or if your kiddo thought of the real baby as completely different?
