Can empaths be judgy and insult others?

Let’s say someone claims to be an empath and have empathy, but to my knowledge that means you feels a lot and view the other persons perspective. Now can an empath tho be judgy and put others down and be rude? Seems like it contradicts.

My mother in law will claim to be an empath, but she’ll call my husbands sister Ugly, Fat, not good enough, crazy if she speaks up for herself, and will disregard when she mentions she has bad anxiety. And this is constant, not as bad as it used to be but several times a month there’s a jab. Let’s say she sees someone at the store with blue hair, she’ll comment that’s weird or ugly

Maybe my definition and understanding of one has been off
