Religious exemptions for drug use- is it ok?
The post earlier about O’Douls got me thinking about alcohol use and minors.
Freedom of religion has been used in a number of court cases in the US to justify drug or alcohol use that might otherwise be illegal. Children commonly take a sip or two of wine during church or temple ceremonies (which was even permitted during the Prohibition era). Rastafarian churches have fought legal battles in regards to religious weed use. Freedom of religion has also been stated in regards to ayahuasca retreats in the US, since ayahuasca has been an important part of some Native American practices. I know the Soul Quest church in Florida currently offers an ayahuasca retreat.
Should there be religious exemptions for drug use? Why or why not?
Edit: assuming that non religious use is still illegal/prosecutable.
