Building your own house

We are planning to buy/build our own home in the next 2 years

We are planning to save 60-70k over the next two years in order to either put a down payment on a house and then have money for renovations if needed OR build our own house

For those of you that have built your own house, what made you do that instead of buying?

We have never bought a house before so we aren’t sure what route to take. We don’t know for sure which the best option is

Also, for those of you that have built your own house, how did you go about doing that?? Obviously the first step is to buy land, but how did you know where to start after that?
