What does this mean?

Question

My son is 14 months old and since he was about 6 months old I believe, he bangs his head. At first it was only now and then, so I wasn’t concerned. But for the past month he bangs his head on the pillow every day before naps or before bed time. 
He also sometimes has a head tic where he shakes his head repeatedly and so I’m not sure what all of this means.
Does anyone know if this is normal or if this is a bad sign of something serious?
He will be going to his check up next month, but idk what to think right now.

My first son done that. For him it was self soothing. The shaking of the head was a way to make himself have the sensation of being rocked to sleep. Very common apparently. But sure talk it over with his doctor.

My daughter does both of these. She always bouncing her head on the couch I think for comfort and she sometimes rock herself to sleep doing that. Also she shakes her head “no” but not as often as she used to.

Both are common in children that age- both in kids with additional needs as well as kids with no additional needs, usually as either a self soothing tool or it’s just something fun they’ve figured out how to do. My nephew also did it a lot when he was a baby when he had an ear infection.
I would definitely talk to your doctor about it to rule out other concerns but wouldn’t worry too much. Just keep him safe from banging his head on hard surfaces.

Too young for a tic yet.  Toddlers just do bizarre things.  I asked about my 14 month old banging his head and his OT Judy laughed and said some kids are obsessed with doing it once they learn.

Could be that he just figured out that he can do those things and they're new and fun.   It might not 'mean' anything.
